Review: This AirTag-Equipped Luggage Tag is Genius and I'm Here For It

I’m a big fan of feeding two birds with one scone, meaning accomplishing two things at once. (What, you thought I was going murder birds with a stone?)

I’m also a big fan of anything that simplifies travel, arguably one of the most stressful activities there is.

Enter the Spotminders Trackable Luggage Tag, which looks like just about every lux leather tag you’ve strapped to your suitcase but hides a secret weapon: Apple Find My.

Yep, for all intents and purposes, this is also an AirTag, meaning you can easily track your luggage if it goes missing. It’s a such a simple idea, but perfectly executed here. (Well, almost.)

Available in black from Amazon but also brown from Spotminders directly, the tag is made of Litchi Signature non-animal leather and definitely has a high-quality look and feel. The large flap that reveals the windowed ID card inside snaps shut with a satisfying magnetic plop.

It’s hard to believe there’s any tech baked into this, but flip it over and, sure enough, there’s a small lightning-bolt embossed into the backside along with a button used to pair the tag to your phone.

To charge it, you just lay it on any wireless charging pad; an embedded red LED turns green when it’s done. (For the record, Spotminders estimates the charge will last up to one year, which is excellent.)

Once you’ve paired it with your iPhone (sorry, Android users), this works just like an AirTag or any other Find My-compatible tracker: If it’s within Bluetooth range (around 30 feet), it’ll beep. If not (it’s in, say, Houston instead of Chicago), you’ll be able to get a bead on its whereabouts if any other iPhone user gets within range.

I tested the tag for range and loudness. While it had no trouble connecting from 30 feet away (and even a little further), I couldn’t hear it beeping until I was much closer — and even then it wasn’t what I’d call loud. But that’s true of most card-style trackers; there’s just not a loud of room in there for a big speaker.

How much does that really matter? This is a suitcase we’re talking about, not a wallet that fell into the couch cushions. The goal is to determine roughly where it is; your eyes can take it from there. Similarly, the Spotminders tag doesn’t support Apple’s Precision Finding technology, which helps you zero on its exact location when you’re close by, but I’d argue it doesn’t need to:

No, my only real issue is cost: At $59, this is a pretty pricey luggage tag. You could accomplish roughly the same thing with an inexpensive regular one and a $29 Apple AirTag.

That said, I love this mash-up, a genuinely useful travel accessory. If the price doesn’t bug you, definitely pick one up. (And while you’re at it, there’s a similarly useful Spotminders Trackable Passport Holder for international travelers.)

💡 VERDICT: Clever! It’s a luggage tag, but also an Apple AirTag (without the bulk). Strap this to your suitcase and you’ll always know where it lands. We just wish it cost a little less.
